One of the people brings that sentiment to life through his camera lens and a man I’m happy to call my friend has the talent of taking the beauty and splendor of this little slice of heaven I call home and capture it in some of the most amazing pictures. His name is Chris Terrell and his work is something to behold!

Since it was reported yesterday that we had a new member of our Orca family arrive with the birth of a baby Orca in the J Pod, I thought I’d post this piece from the Anacortes Chamber or Commerce on the active Whale Watching opportunities we have here in beautiful Anacortes.

One of my favorite weekends of the year is coming up as we celebrate the works of nearly 90 Northwest Artists creating some of the most unique pieces I’ve ever seen! This festival is really one of a kind and a must see for anyone interested is seeing some of the most creative artisans and best music around! I’m also very proud since John L. Scott is one of the sponsors of this event.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The Anacortes Arts and Crafts Festival got its start in 1962 as the brain-child of Dr. Jack Papritz and a group of dedicated community arts patrons. The idea came from Dr. Papritz’s European travels, specifically the Parisienne Montmartre – a French open-air cafe.

With the support of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce, and $300 in seed money, the first festival in July of 1962 was billed as “the longest art display in the world.” In the 50 years since that simple beginning, the Festival has grown into one of the largest and most respected Festivals in the northwest.

THE EARLY FESTIVAL

In it’s early years, the main emphasis of the Festival was fine art in a festive atmosphere. There were judged pieces in both amateur and professional divisions, a youth art exhibit, and a venue for artists of all levels to display their work. Throughout its history, this commitment to art has remained constant and today is realized in the Art at the Port exhibition that showcases cutting edge northwest art through Invitational and Juried shows.
